Below the Surface

For the past couple of years, I’ve been trying to scratch an itch of wanting to be an underwater photographer by visiting as many aqauriums as I could. I made it to five. Atlanta, GA; Phoenix, AZ; Seattle, WA; Vancouver, B.C. and Newport, OR.

One Late Spring

While we may have had one of the coolest and wettest springs on record in the Pacific Northwest, spring did eventually arrive. I was so thrilled that I had to document its emergence. With these images I am experimenting using some textures and overlays to create a little atmosphere.

The Landscape Squared

Square format photos add a whole new dimension to photography. Four even sides. If the subject is landscape, it can often be hard to compose in a square, but once succeeded, can produce a striking image. Square pictures allow for more foreground than a horizontal rectangle without entirely being about the foreground background relationship. I’ve taken some recent images and pulled a few medium format negatives out and scanned them, to play with this idea.

The Salton Sea

Being somewhat drawn to the aftermath of man’s folly, I found myself curiously addicted to the story of the Salton Sea. During the 1950’s the area was advertised as “The Salton Riviera” and even into the 70’s and 80’s there remained a few lively resort destinations.  Today the ravaged consequence of nature’s refusal to conform to man’s desires is evident for all of the senses to absorb. From the acrid smell of dead fish and raw sewage to the corroding landscape, therein lie reminders of what remains from foolish dreams.

Along the Coast Starlight Route

The photographs in this series range in date from 1988 to 2010. I’ve taken this Amtrak route several times and highly recommend the journey. The route originates in Seattle and ends in Los Angeles. The Coast Starlight unveils sweeping views of mountains passes, fertile valleys, rivers, rugged coastline and slices of everyday life.
Photographing from a train does pose some challenges as the rocking motion and dirty windows can interfere with the shot. Add the fact that you only have one chance to snap the shutter, there’s no going back for a second  exposure of the scene. However, the route does go through areas one wouldn’t be able to access by any other means of transportation.
